Do You Need a Single or Double Swing Gate?

Are you considering installing a new swinging automatic gate for your property? You’ll need to decide between a single or double gate style. Each has its benefits, and knowing the differences between the two will help you choose the gate that best suits your property and your needs. Here are some factors you need to consider for each gate type.

Single Swing Gates

A single swing gate has one panel that swings from the side on hinges attached to a post. Here are some things to consider for single swing gates:

  • A single swing gate is less expensive than a double swing gate because you need only one automatic door opener.

  • A single swing gate is easier to install than a double swing gate because you need only half the hardware, such as latches, hinges and handles.

  • A single swing gate requires a deeper clearance space than a double swing gate. For example, a single swing gate with a width of three metres will require a three-metre radius to open. A double swing gate with the same width needs only 1.5 metres of clearance to open.

  • A single swing gate requires a sturdier, heavier post that can carry the gate’s entire weight.

  • A single swing gate has a maximum width of about four metres (14 feet).

Double Swing Gates

A double swing gate consists of two panels that swing open from the centre. Here are some things to consider for double swing gates.

  • A double swing gate can cover wider driveway openings than a single swing gate.

  • A double swing gate requires a smaller swing radius to open and close than a single swing gate.

  • The symmetry of a double swing gate opening from the centre gives your entrance an elegant appearance.

  • A double swing gate requires more hardware and two automatic gate openers. That makes it more expensive to buy and install than a single swing gate.

Other Considerations for Choosing a Gate

Other factors to consider when choosing a single or double swing gate include:

  • Do you have a sloping driveway? A driveway that slopes may require a sliding gate, or you could make your gate open away from the incline.

  • Does your driveway open onto a busy street or sidewalk? Your gate will have to open inward to avoid interfering with traffic.

  • Is this a pedestrian gate or a vehicle gate? Single swing gates are better suited for narrower openings like pedestrian entrances. Double swing gates can cover wider openings and are an excellent choice for vehicle entrances.
