Wrought iron fences
Lifespan: centuries
Wrought iron is a classic durable fence material that can last many centuries with proper maintenance. Many of the wrought-iron balcony railings in the French Quarter of New Orleans date back to the 1700s. However, iron is also prone to rust, so it requires regular care and maintenance. Additionally, iron ornamental fencing is more expensive than other types of products.
Brick or masonry fences
Lifespan: 100+ years A masonry fence can be made of concrete, cinder blocks, bricks or stucco travertine. A fence made of these materials is built to last and will stand for more than 100 years.
Aluminum fences
Lifespan: 30 to 50 years
Aluminum provides durability because it’s rust-resistant. It’s also lightweight and easy to install. Aluminum fencing requires little maintenance other than an annual cleaning. An aluminum fence can last up to half a century.
Vinyl fences
Lifespan: 35 to 40 years
Vinyl fencing won’t rust and requires little maintenance. It’s a bit more expensive than wood but needs far less care. It’s also resistant to pest infestations.
Chain link fencing
Lifespan: 20+ years
Quick and easy to install, chain-link fencing is durable, affordable and requires little maintenance. It’s also easy to repair. A galvanized chain-link fence is coated with zinc and therefore tolerant to extreme weather. Chain link has a shorter life span than other materials, but its low cost makes it a popular option.
Pressure-treated wood
Lifespan: 20 to 50 years
Wood is the least durable fence material, but treated lumber can last many decades. However, wood fences require annual cleaning and staining or painting.
